A Different Type Indeed (Part I)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-167\" href=\"http:\/\/josephshaub.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/collab-lawyer-types\/mbti-2-2\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-167\" title=\"MBTI.2\" src=\"http:\/\/josephshaub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/MBTI.21-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"http:\/\/josephshaub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/MBTI.21-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/josephshaub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/MBTI.21.jpg 249w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>There&#8217;s been loads written about lawyers and psychological type.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Larry Richard did a landmark study in the early 90&#8217;s that became his doctoral dissertation all about<a title=\"About Larry Richards and Type\" href=\"http:\/\/josephshaub.com\/pdfs\/sfl_oa16.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"> lawyers and psychological type<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It has even\u00a0been the subject of\u00a0 many<a title=\"Daicoff Essay\" href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/www.wcl.american.edu\/journal\/lawrev\/46\/daictxt.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"> Law Review Articles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #800080;\">\u00a0<\/span>(a place you&#8217;d expect only to see hyper technical discussions of <em>the law<\/em> for lawyers).<\/p>\n<p>There are 4 pairs of preferences and 16 combinations.\u00a0 We have many ways to slice the same orange.\u00a0 Most important for this post &#8211; David Keirsey devised 4 overall temperaments from these combinations.\u00a0 You can explore his ideas and take his Keirsey Temperament Sorter <a title=\"Keirsey.com Website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.keirsey.com\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since the ancient Greeks, philosophers and psychologists have grouped people into categories that, over time, are remarkably similar.\u00a0 Keirsey&#8217;s Temperaments offer a wonderful window into this world of observation.\u00a0 The combination of the practical, down-to-earth Sensing preference with the flexible, play-it-as it lays Perceiving preference brings us the <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong><em>SP Artisan<\/em><\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 (Reading some of the links above will give some concise background of these preferences.)\u00a0\u00a0 The combination of this same Sensing preference with the organized, results-oriented Judging preference brings us the <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em><strong>SJ Guardian<\/strong><\/em><\/span>.\u00a0 Combining the ever-inquisitive, speculating Intuitive preference with the logical, &#8220;how does it all fit together&#8221; Thinking preference results in the <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em><strong>NT Rational<\/strong><\/em><\/span>.\u00a0 Finally, the same meaning-seeking Intuition preference, when combined with the empathic, personal values-driven Feeling prerence results in the <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em><strong>NF Idealist<\/strong><\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a close look at each of these:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-171\" href=\"http:\/\/josephshaub.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/collab-lawyer-types\/elvis\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-171\" title=\"Elvis\" src=\"http:\/\/josephshaub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Elvis-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"107\" height=\"116\" \/><\/a>The <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong><em>SP Artisan<\/em><\/strong> <\/span>lives for today.\u00a0 As Keirsey says, &#8220;Artisans are most at home in the real world of solid objects that can be made and manipulated, and of real-life events that can be experienced in the here and now.&#8221;\u00a0<a rel=\"attachment wp-att-172\" href=\"http:\/\/josephshaub.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/collab-lawyer-types\/fdr\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-172\" title=\"FDR\" src=\"http:\/\/josephshaub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/FDR-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"87\" height=\"95\" \/><\/a> Artisan&#8217;s &#8220;go for it,&#8221; whatever their &#8220;it&#8221; may be, and resist limitations and rules if they stand in the way.\u00a0 Artisans are likely to have winning personalities and can be excellent at enjoying life.\u00a0 They&#8217;re not big cogitators.\u00a0 Elvis and FDR are representative Artisans in their different fields.\u00a0 About 30-35% of the general population tend toward the Artisan temperament.<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em><strong>NF\u00a0\u00a0Idealist<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0values<em><span style=\"color: #800080;\"> values<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 Supporting others to deepen their personal growth and well-being are ardent pursuits of the Idealist.\u00a0 Keirsey says that , &#8220;Idealists dream of creating harmonious, even caring personal relations, and they have a unique talent for helping people get along with each other and work together for the good of all.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-178\" href=\"http:\/\/josephshaub.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/collab-lawyer-types\/oprah\/\"><strong><em><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-178   alignright\" title=\"Oprah\" src=\"http:\/\/josephshaub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Oprah.bmp\" alt=\"\" width=\"79\" height=\"64\" \/><\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-177 alignleft\" title=\"Ghandi\" src=\"http:\/\/josephshaub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Ghandi-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"71\" height=\"78\" \/><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Idealists base their self image on empathy, authenticity and benevolence.\u00a0 They tend to hold themselves to\u00a0quite a high standard of personal integrity.\u00a0 \u00a0Representative Idealists include Mohandas Ghandi and Oprah Winfrey.\u00a0 About 15 &#8211; 20% of the general population tend toward the Idealist temperament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The <span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong><em>SJ Guardian<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> <\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">is the pillar of whatever community they may find themselves a part of.\u00a0 Reliable, steady, realistic and stalwart, Guardians find their greatest value in being an integral part of a greater whole.\u00a0 As Keirsey notes, &#8221;\u00a0if there&#8217;s a job to be done, they can be counted on to put their shoulder to the wheel. Guardians also believe in law and order, and sometimes worry th<\/span><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-181\" href=\"http:\/\/josephshaub.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/collab-lawyer-types\/stewart\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-181\" title=\"Stewart\" src=\"http:\/\/josephshaub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Stewart.bmp\" alt=\"\" width=\"80\" height=\"114\" \/><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">at respect for authority, even a fundamental sense of right and wrong, is being lost.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 Guardians tend to trust authority and are comfortable in a leadership role.\u00a0 They tend to be conservative, in that change can make them uneasy.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-184\" href=\"http:\/\/josephshaub.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/collab-lawyer-types\/washington\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-184\" title=\"Washington\" src=\"http:\/\/josephshaub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Washington-144x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"81\" height=\"82\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Representative Guardians are George Washington and actor James Stewart, in\u00a0his many iconic roles from Mr. Smith going to Washington to George Bailey in <em>Its a Wonderful Life.\u00a0 <\/em>About 40-45% of the population tend toward the Guardian temperament<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u00a0Finally, the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><em>NT Rational <\/em><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">is the pragmatic, ingenious seeker of knowledge and accomplishment.\u00a0 If there is one word that characterizes the goal of the Rational, it is <em>competence.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 As Keirsey says, &#8220;They are rigorously logical and fiercely independent in their thinking &#8212; are indeed skeptical of all ideas, even their own &#8212; and they believe they can overcome any obstacle with their will power. Often they<a rel=\"attachment wp-att-187\" href=\"http:\/\/josephshaub.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/collab-lawyer-types\/bill-gates\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-187\" title=\"Bill.Gates\" src=\"http:\/\/josephshaub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Bill.Gates_.bmp\" alt=\"\" width=\"95\" height=\"89\" \/><\/a> are seen as cold and distant, but this is really the absorbed concentration they give to whatever problem they&#8217;re working on.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 Rationals may see themselves &#8211; and others will see them &#8211; as technicians.\u00a0 Precision &#8211; in thinking and language &#8211; is highly valued.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-188\" href=\"http:\/\/josephshaub.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/collab-lawyer-types\/jefferson\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-188\" title=\"Jefferson\" src=\"http:\/\/josephshaub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Jefferson.bmp\" alt=\"\" width=\"118\" height=\"113\" \/><\/a>Bill Gates and Thomas Jefferson are quintissential Rationals.\u00a0 Approximately 5 &#8211; 10% of the general population tend toward the Rational temperament.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As we will see in the next post, the array of these different temperaments in the legal population and in the collaborative law community may speak volumes about who lawyers are &#8211; and the kinds of people who have struck out along the path of Collaborative Law.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s been loads written about lawyers and psychological type.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Larry Richard did a landmark study in the early 90&#8217;s that became his doctoral dissertation all about lawyers and psychological type.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It has even\u00a0been the subject of\u00a0 many Law Review Articles\u00a0(a place you&#8217;d expect only to see hyper technical discussions of the law for lawyers).
